The 'Picasso' Spanish restaurant,
with it's outdoor balcony within the intricate neon
matrix wonderland of Time Square, was one of the most
popular places at the Expo where one could enjoy the
best of Spanish tapas, sangria, and cuisine, whilst
overlooking all the buzz and cosmopolitan crowd of any
Expo night or day.
Host nation of the then upcoming mega-events the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the 1992 Universal Exposition of Seville, Spain was out to impress the world with her Pavilion at Expo '88 - where, under the twin themes of 'Spain Discovers the World' and 'The World Discovers Spain' - one could view rare 17th century Spanish maritime maps and charts; world masters such as Miro, Dali and Picasso; and, in the '1992' room, view scale models of the Olympic Games and Universal Exposition sites. World Expo '88 and the Pavilion of Spain were also hosts for the visit of the King of Spain, King Juan Carlos, for the National Day of Spain celebrations at World Expo '88. As part of the closing ceremonies of World Expo '88 at the end of October, promotions for the 1992 Universal Exposition of Seville came into full swing, where, amongst other events, the perennial favourite Spanish rock band 'Mecano' gave a special concert at the Expo River Stage, and, at the end of the Closing Ceremony of Brisbane's World Expo '88 the next day, on the 30th October (also at the River Stage), Spanish flamenco dancers and an Expo '92-themed laser and fireworks display featured, and the official Bureau of International Expositions flag was handed from visiting V.I.P.s Secretary-General of the B.I.E. Madame Marie Helena Defrene, to the Commissioner-General of Expo '92, Ambassador Manuel Olivencia. |
